Designing for perpetuity

Bruce Mau believes sustainability is the baseline - a necessary place from which to start.

It is the price of entry, not the endgame. Sustainability is actually the least we can do. It is far from the most we are capable of.

Most sustainability projects, however valid in themselves, rest on a platform or infrastructure that is inherently unsustainable.

Instead of sustainability, we should think in terms of perpetuity - a mode of life that is intrinsically self-sustaining.

Designing for perpetuity requires us to reexamine the deep, underlying structures that support us. Designing for perpetuity means looking for forms that not only reduce waste but produce new life.
