Let’s change things up
Yes, it’s a brand new year.
It’s time to change things up. To mix things around. To try new things. Uncomfortable things. Unknown things
Let’s wind down the regimented publish-a-new-short-story-every-Sunday program. Let’s ease up on the inflexible deadlines. Let’s sway a little. Let’s open up.
Let’s be a little less methodical and a little more adventurous. Let’s be a little less fixed, more moving. More open to new possibilities.
Stop reading and thinking and writing about the tragic politics of the day. (Although the shift from democracy to technocracy will inevitably creep in one way or another.)
Double down on universal human stories that transcend our times. Journal entries, quick notes, sharp stories. Scenes from upcoming screenplays and novels. Imaginative speculations. Quixotic theses.
Dig a little deeper, write a little further. Push language and narrative. Exceed expectations.
Stop writing like a machine, like clockwork.
Start writing like a poet.
