Reading the internet
Ann Mangen studies how reading has changed.
Ann says reading used to train us to focus in a linear manner, from one thing to the next. Sequential and consequential thought. Rational. Logical.
But Ann’s research shows reading has changed significantly since the internet. Because the internet has trained us to manically jump from one thing to another. We’re more likely to scan and skim, to run our eyes over the information to extract what we need.
This frenzied reading on the internet bleeds over to normal reading and causes us to do the same with books.
It’s how we read now.
And how we think.
